Siding by Watson Exteriors

Alberta · Saskatchewan · Manitoba

Siding built to still
look right in year twenty.

Watson Exteriors installs James Hardie fiber cement, vinyl, LP and board-and-batten siding across Calgary and area, Regina and Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg and Manitoba. Every job is measured on site, quoted in writing with the exact products and colours named, and — because hail is part of the deal out here — built to take a storm without needing a full re-clad.

What's involved

Siding,
done properly.

Four materials, and the right one depends on the elevation, the exposure and how long you plan to stay.

Hardie · Vinyl · LP · Board & batten

James Hardie fiber cement

James Hardie — often just called "Hardie Board" — is fiber cement siding that resists rot and holds up to hail better than most materials on the market, without the maintenance a wood product needs. It costs more upfront than vinyl, and for a lot of homeowners in hail country, that's the trade-off worth making.

Vinyl siding

Vinyl is the practical, lower-maintenance option — quick to install, available in a huge range of colours, and if a storm only damages one elevation, we can usually patch that section without touching the rest of the house.

LP siding

LP gives you the look of wood trim and panel siding with better resistance to moisture and impact than real wood, at a price between vinyl and Hardie.

Board & batten

A vertical-panel profile for the look, used as an accent or across a full elevation where the style calls for it.

Patch or full re-clad?

Not every storm means replacing the whole house. If the damage is limited to one elevation and the siding is still a colour and profile we can match, we'll patch just that section. If the siding's discontinued, faded unevenly, or the damage is spread across multiple elevations, a full re-clad is usually the more honest recommendation — we'll tell you which one you actually need before you pay for either.

Common questions

Siding.

What is the best siding for Alberta weather?

For hail specifically, James Hardie fiber cement holds up best. Vinyl is a reasonable, lower-cost option that's easy to patch if it does get damaged. Most of what we install in this region is one of those two, depending on budget and how the house is built.

Is James Hardie siding worth the extra cost over vinyl?

It depends on how long you're planning to stay in the house and how much hail exposure the property gets. Hardie costs more to install but resists impact and holds its colour longer, so it can work out cheaper over 15–20 years even though it costs more today.

Can you patch just one section of siding after a hailstorm?

Usually, yes — vinyl in particular is easy to patch on a single elevation. Hardie and LP can sometimes be colour-matched too, depending on how long the original siding has been up and whether that profile and colour are still available.

How much does siding replacement cost per square foot in Calgary?

It depends on the material, the number of storeys, how much scaffolding the site needs, and the condition of the sheathing underneath — which is why we measure on site rather than quoting a square-foot rate over the phone. You'll get a written scope with the exact products, colours and square footage before anything is ordered.

What's the difference between vinyl, fiber cement and LP siding?

Vinyl is the lowest-cost, easiest to patch. Fiber cement (James Hardie) costs more but resists hail and rot better and lasts longer. LP sits in between — wood-look panels and trim with better moisture resistance than real wood. We'll walk through which fits your budget and the house on the initial visit.
